Happy Reformation Day!
It’s been a while since I’ve been on here, so I thought I’d come on to write a little on this christian holiday!
1. What is Reformation Day?
That’s a great question. I don’t want to assume that all Christians know about today or assume all are just as passionate about church history like myself.😂
Let me explain real quick!
Reformation Day remembers a major turning point in church history when Martin Luther, a German monk, stood up and said, “Hey, something’s not right here. You people have this wrong.”
This happened on October 31, 1517, when Luther nailed a list of 95 Theses (basically, 95 statements he found wrong with the churches doctrine) to the door of a catholic church in Wittenberg, Germany. He wasn’t trying to start a new religion, he just wanted the Church to get back to what the Bible actually said!
At the time, the Catholic Church was very powerful and very rich. One big problem Luther had was that people were being told, by the church mind you, that they could buy forgiveness of sins by paying money. (Indulgences)
Luther believed, as do I, went against the very message of the Bible’s that we are saved by grace through faith in Jesus, not by money or good deeds.
I agree with Luther! This is what the Catholic Church still hold to today, which is a rejection of scripture. Which is my Catholicism is a false doctrine and a Hersey!
2. What Happened Next
His ideas spread like wildfire. This was, of course, because of a movement of God, but also due to the new printing press. People for the first time had written word in their own language. Before, people would often have to rely on what the priest said because written copies of the Bible were too expensive for the common person. This inevitablyled to what’s now called the Protestant Reformation.
3. Why It Matters
Because of the Reformation, Christians began reading the Bible for themselves, worshiping in their own languages, and refocusing on the simple truth of the Gospel:
“We are saved by Grace alone, Through Faith alone, In Christ alone, According to Scripture alone, For the Glory of God alone.
We must still today, preach, teach, and hold to these gospel truths! We must always be Reforming because culture will try to change was is unchangeable!
Progressive Christianity today seeks to undermine these very truths that Luther preached in 1517.
There is no other Gospel, there is no other Bible, there is no other Christ than what we find in Scripture.
And when we go away from scripture, we will inevitably find ourselves slowly falling asleep at the wheel.
